Constitution of Amidaji International Temple

The crest of Amidaji

revised and updated on July 6th 2022

Any place where unenlightened beings meet needs some kind of organization, especially if it is a Dharma place. In our case, if we want to preserve and transmit the Jodo Shinshu teaching, we need a good team of people who can accomplish that goal. However, a team cannot work without common rules that will help us focus on our religious goal, so I hope this Constitution will provide the administrative base, rules and regulations for our aspirations.

During many years of monkhood in which I have closely watched the ways of various Jodo Shinshu temples and communities I realized that a reform in both doctrinal and administration matters is very much needed.

On Amidaji branch of Jodo Shinshu and its relation with Nishi Hongwanji

Amidaji is now an independent branch of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism. However, we did not appear from nowhere and we did not invent Jodo Shinshu. We received this teaching due to the efforts of many generations of followers and teachers who worked for its preservation and transmission. This is why I say in the Constitution (chapter I) that we do have a traditional connection to Nishi Hongwanji which means that
“we inherit the essentials of Jodo Shinshu teaching as transmitted through the Nishi Hongwanji branch”.

Monks and nuns ordinations in Amidaji Branch of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism

(last revised July 6th 2022)

Monks and nuns are men and women who received the tokudo (monk/nun ordination) from any monk and nun in Amidaji system. Monks and nuns of Amidaji are called monks and nuns of the Last Dharma Age or monks in name only (nominal monks) as well as monks (or nuns) without precepts. The doctrinal base for such a monk ordination as well as detailed explanations are presented here (click to read).

Monks and nuns will not form separate orders inside Amidaji but will be treated equally without any discrimination. However, no discrimination also means that the rules are the same for all. Whenever the term “monk” is used in the present Constitution for easy language, it also automatically includes nuns.

The tokudo candidate must choose a monk or nun from Amidaji sangha as his/her personal teacher with whom he will train in the doctrine and liturgies of Amidaji. Then he must pass an examination with him. The examination will contain general topics established for all candidates at the level of the entire Amidaji organization as well as special topics decided by his teacher and examiner. He must also meet the necessary requirements of a monk as explained in this section.

I added the double doors and windows of Amidado (Hall of Amida)

Amidado (Hall of Amida) with the new
double doors and windows
CLICK HERE TO READ ABOUT THE NEW UPGRADES AT THE TEMPLE

In July I built the walls of Amidado (Hall of Amida) and these days I successfully added a double door and two windows. I also added some covering materials on the four sides of the roof.
The total price was around 560 euros.

These type of doors and windows were more expansive than wood but the cheapest of their kind. I could not chose to make a wooden door for two reasons: 1) professional wood carpenters are very rare in my area, and 2) the wood is not so resistant to rain, snow and other elements, often swelling if its too wet outside and causing many problems. However, after I add the outside insulation I might paint the double door and windows in a color that imitates wood.

double doors and windows
For the moment, the Amidado is not fit for religious services, especially not for services in the hot or cold season. The next important steps are to add thermal insulation and another wall inside (the walls of Amidado must be like a sandwich with insulation inside), and another insulation on the outside walls, plus a good paint.
These things will probably cost around 2000 euros or more.

and windows
I would also need to add a new similar double door to the present Hondo (Dharma Hall) and Library because the actual doors were damaged by the exposure to elements. These might cost around 600-700 euros and are a top priority.

As all the Dharma activities at Amidaji are done for free, the temple depends on the benevolence of its readers and friends, so please help if you can! Any little donation is welcome and very much needed.

My religion is Jodo Shinshu Buddhism - Amidaji lineage

the crest of Amidaji Sangha
Let it be known.
My religion is Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, Amidaji lineage.
I am NOT in the same school with all kinds of heretics and proponents of wrong views who misuse the label of "Jodo Shinshu". I am NOT the colleague of those who call Amida a myth, a metaphor, a fictional character or who say that "Pure Land is here and now" or "in the mind". Also, I am NOT in the same school with those who use Jodo Shinshu as a vehicle for various ideological and sexual groups. I am a member of Jodo Shinshu Amidaji, an orthodox lineage of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism.

New statue of Amida Buddha from Zuikoji temple in Osaka

A great gift arrived today at Amidaji from Rev Oku Kyokai  of Zuikoji temple in Osaka. I am very grateful to him for this surprise. He is also the one who offered us the Amida scroll we have in the Hondo. After the completion of the
Amidado (Hall of Amida), the statue will be placed there  and the scroll will remain in the Hall where it is now
and which will be transformed into library.

Building the walls of Amidado (Hall of Amida)

Amidado after building exterior walls
and treated them with wood lacquer

As you may know, in June I built the roof and last year the metal frame and concrete platform of Amidado (Hall of Amida).

These days I started working on the walls. Here you can see some photos with the materials I bought and the progress I made until now. The total amount paid was around 1000 euros. My plan is to make a sandwich type of wall. This is composed of double walls filled with thermal insulation. On the outside walls I must also add  another insulation and a water resistant paint. However, I made only one wall and postponed the rest for another time when I am able to raise more funds. I will also need a double door and windows, a stove, etc. The cost of all the things that need to be done for Amidado is around 3000 euros.

The roof of Amidado (Hall of Amida) and next plan

The roof is ready, shinning in the sun!

As you may know, last year I built the concrete platform and metal frame for Amidado (Hall of Amida). These days I finished the construction of the roof. The total amount I paid for two workers and materials was 750 euros.

I needed to start with the roof this year because it was cheaper than the walls. I will, of course, continue with the walls as soon as I raise the necessary amount which will probably be arround 2000 euros (double walls filled with thermal insulation, door, windows, exterior insulation and paint, workers, etc).

Amidaji crest

Two hands in gassho encircled by a nenju (Buddhist mala) with an eight-petal lotus above.

The hands in gassho encircled by a nenju represent devotion. The lotus with eight petals represents the Eight Elements of Faith and  the Eight Precepts of Faith which are central to Amidaji teaching style of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism (Amida Dharma).

The Name, Namo Amida Bu (homage to/I take refuge in Amida Buddha) is added at the bottom, sustaining the other two elements. It is the usual way of saying Nembutsu at our temple during services.

The crest is made on black and white to show the simplicity, humbleness and unpretentious style of Amidaji temple.

Amidaji crest may also appear in this style, when the name of the temple is not used:

Variants with only the lotus and Nembutsu or just the lotus are also accepted.

The metal frame for the walls and roof of Amidado (Amida Hall) of Amidaji temple

the metal frame of Amidado (finished)
CLICK HERE TO READ ABOUT THE NEW UPGRADES AT THE TEMPLE

I finished the metal frame for the walls and roof of Amidado (Amida Hall). The worker said that a metal frame, although very expansive, is better than a wooden frame, and I listened to his advice.

So, I spent around 1200 euros in total for these metal bars and the worker pay. In the photos, you can see the result.
The next steps are to build the roof and the walls. There will be double wooden walls filled with glass wool insulation and covered with another thermal insulation on the outside. I also need to add
the metal frame of Amidado (finished)
two windows and a big entrance door. Materials for the walls and worker pay are surely arround 1500 euros or more (sorry, last time I miscalculated again the costs for the walls). The materials and worker payment for the roof will be arround 750 euros. I will try to first build the roof and then the walls.

Please help if you can. Any little amount is useful and very much needed.

The concrete platform of Amidado (Hall of Amida) of Amidaji temple

the concrete platform for the Amidado
(Hall of Amidado)
Finally, I was able to start working at the new Hondo of Amidaji which will be called Amidado (Hall of Amida).

Due to my lack of building knowledge, I falsely assumed that 80% of Amidado will be around 1000 euro. However, I was terribly wrong as I already spent 821 Euros only for the concrete platform, plus other various small related expenses!

The construction materials (71 sacks of cement, 5 cars with gravel, construction mesh, etc) were  2500 Romanian lei and the paid worker 1400 Romanian lei. Total amount spent: 3900 Romanian lei which is equivalent to 821 Euros.

The three types of prostrations - Amidaji style (video)

There are three types of prostrations presented at Amidaji temple:

1)      Half body prostration from sitting
2)      Half body prostration from standing
3)      Full body prostration from standing

1)      Half body prostration from sitting
We place our hands in gassho on the crown of our head, at the forehead, at the throat level, and at the level of the heart. Then we bow with our head touching the ground and our palms facing upwards. We slightly raise our palms and we keep them there for a few seconds. We do this three times and at the end we bow with our hands in gassho from sitting.

The Nembutsu liturgy of Amidaji temple (final version)

last update and revised
26th August 2019

Although we also have other services, I  decided this will be the main liturgy at Amidaji temple. Unlike other services that you can see in various temples, this one is easier to follow, especially because all parts (including the Three Invitations) are recited, not chanted.

Eight guidelines to protect and transmit the true faith in Amida Buddha

Many people asked me for a detailed and strict guideline on how to think and act in matters related with faith (shinjin), so that they do not fall into wrong views, nor be a cause of wrong views in others. As you probably know if you read my book The Meaning of Faith and Nembutsu in Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, I always teach that genuine faith in Amida Buddha has eight elements:

1) To accept the actual, literal existence of Amida Buddha and His Pure Land
2) To accept the story of Amida  Buddha as told by Shakyamuni Buddha in the Larger Sutra

Visit of two friends from Brasil at Amidaji temple

Fernando Campos, Josho and Thais Campos

These days at Amidaji I received the visit of Thais Campos and Fernando Campos (81 years old) from Brasil. We had a meaningful retreat filled with Nembutsu services and Dharma talks. As you know, Amidaji temple is always happy to receive visitors who are in a learning mood for hearing the Amida Dharma. Conditions for visitation are explained here (click here).
